FAQs

What is Gold-plating?

Gold plating process in which we deposit a very thin layer of gold on the surface of another metal predominantly by chemical or electro-chemical plating. Gold is generally one of the protective metals of choice due to its higher standard electrode potential compared to other metals like palladium, silver, copper, tin, nickel, etc.

How to gold-plate an object?

Using the electrolytic plating process that’s a variation on electroplating which is the use of electric current and voltage in order to deposit metal onto another metal surface (usually copper) through a chemical reaction with ions from salt solutions or other chemicals.

When using the electrolytic plating process, the surface is first cleaned and then a layer of gold is applied to it. If you don’t want to deposit any more metal onto this surface, stop here.

If not, apply another layer of copper that will act as an electrical conductor on top of the gold coating thus completing this step

What are the benefits of Gold-plating?

Gold is the noblest of metals and has a higher standard electrode potential than other metals. This makes it corrosion-resistant, inert, and less likely to oxidize.

What is gold plating used for?

One can use it for decorative purposes as well like Gold plating jewelry, medical instruments, beauty products while in some cases, heavy coatings are used to protect against wear and tear.

Gold-plated objects can lose their coating when stored for long periods of time if they come in contact with other metals that corrode easily like copper, brass, and zinc.

What are the different types of gold-plating?

Some of the most common types used in industry are the Hot-dip process, electrochemical and chemical. The difference between them is that hot-dip is an immersion method where we submerge it into a bath of molten gold whereas with electropolishing or electrolytic plating one applies voltage to deposit material onto the surface.

What are the important factors to consider when Gold-plating?

Gold plating is done by dipping an object in a solution made up of gold and cyanide. The number of times it needs to be dipped will depend on the thickness of the layer that is needed (the thicker the layer, the more dips). Sometimes, two or three layers are sputtered onto the item simultaneously which will speed up the process.

It’s recommended one takes care when handling objects with a thick gold coating as they can become brittle once it’s dry. Similarly, one should take care when polishing surfaces coated in heavy gold- since this also removes some of the material and makes edges sharper than what you’re used to.

Why hire a professional gold-plating specialist at Eminence, Dubai?

When you are gold plating on silver, you have to be very careful. You cannot let any water or chemicals on the surface. This will cause corrosion. A gold-plating specialist makes sure to protect the surface area with a clear coat.

Eminence, Dubai is one of the leading gold-plating specialists in Dubai and has been in this industry for over 10 years. They understand your needs and always deliver exceptional results on time.
