What is electroplating?

Electroplating is an electrochemical process that involves the transfer of electrons from one substance to another to improve the corrosion resistance, create an aesthetically pleasing appearance, and extend the lifetime of the plated surface. Electro-plating, also known as electro cleaning or electrocoating.

How does Electroplating work?

This type of plating works by using electricity to deposit electroplating a metal ions in an object, such that it creates a thin layer of the desired material. The metal ions then form a thin layer of the desired material on this electrode and can be removed from the cell by heating to remove it as vapors, or by adding more liquid solution and repeating the process in order to build up thicker layers over time.

Electro-plating can be achieved using a variety of methods, but one of the most common ways is to use an electrochemical cell. The cells consist of two electrodes; an anode (the negative electrode) and cathode (the positive electrode).

A liquid solution containing ions from the metal being plated is placed in between these two electrodes.

When electricity is applied to this system, electrons flow from the negative electrode through the solution and are given up at the interface between this liquid and solid surface that needs to be coated with metal ions.

The loss of electrons causes positively charged metal ions in the solution to migrate towards and deposit on the negative electrode.

How does electroplating work?

In electroplating, a negative electrode is coated with an object to be plated and dipped into the liquid solution of metal ions (negative electrons). When electricity passes through this circuit, positively charged metal ions in the solution are attracted to the negatively charged surface of the negative electrode.

What are the advantages of electroplating?

The advantages of electroplating include that it is a low-cost process and one which can be done on an industrial scale. Electro-plating also offers the benefits of being environmentally friendly as well as having minimal risks to both humans and animals.

What are the disadvantages of electroplating?

The main disadvantage of this process is that it does not produce complete coverage – if there are any gaps between the two electrodes then these will be left unpolished and will show through.

Electroplating is also not a process that can be done on delicate surfaces as the high-voltage and acid electrolytes will damage them.

What is electroplating used for?

Electroplating is used by a wide range of industries from the automotive industry with items such as bumpers and armrests, to jewelry which relies on its light reflection.

The most important thing to understand about electro-plating is that it can be classified as either an industrial or a decorative process.

Industrial processes are those conducted on large commercial scales in the manufacture of metal products such as pipes, cookware, and machine parts.

Decorative processes use plating techniques to provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance for consumer goods, such as jewelry and silverware.

The process could be applied in any situation where the object to be coated is immobile and can withstand a temperature of 20-40 degrees Celsius.

Which materials can be electroplated?

Electroplating is used on many different materials, but most commonly it is used on copper and zinc. Silver plating is also relatively commonplace. In rare cases, other metals such as aluminium can be electroplated onto steel or iron components to form protective coatings that resist corrosion better than a simple metal oxide layer would do.
